Chosen Becky, an Afro Beat sensation, burst onto the music scene as a dynamic young vocalist and lyricist with her track "Bankuza" commanding the airwaves from late 2018 to early 2019.
Originating from Masaka, Becky's career has been marked by fortuitous moments since her initial recording took flight. She acknowledges her former management team at Nick Productions, along with manager Victor Kamenyo, for their pivotal roles in her journey.
Renowned for hits like "Byabangi," "Tokyuka," "Kapyata," and "Nesimye," Becky's musical repertoire reflects her versatility. Yet, she strives to surpass the success of "Bankuza," which remains synonymous with her artistic identity.
Growing Up and Education
Born Kukiriza Rebecca around 2000, Chosen Becky was raised in a Christian household. Her father, a pastor, and her mother, a devout Christian, instilled strong religious values in her upbringing.
Her educational path led her through primary schooling at Nyendo, followed by secondary education at St. Anthony Kayunga, culminating in completion at St. Gerald's.
Financial constraints prevented her from pursuing A-levels after graduating from senior four. Subsequently, she ventured to Masaka with Mr. Kyanja, securing her first job packing petroleum jelly in Mpigi.
Musical Career
Chosen Becky discovered her vocal talent during her primary seven years at the age of 13.
Inspired by her elder sister Dona's departure from primary school, Becky's musical journey began when she was sought out as a replacement due to her familial connection.
Her knack for singing blossomed throughout her schooling, eventually landing her a job in Masaka. Serendipitously, an opportunity arose with Mr. Joseph Kiwangwaa of NIK Cosmetics, where she impressed with a song composed for their Vaseline promotion.
Despite initial reluctance from her devout mother, Becky's association with NIK Productions under Mr. Joseph's patronage propelled her to Kampala. This collaboration led to her debut recording session at producer Nessim's studios, resulting in the breakout hit "Bankuza," penned by Nice Henry.
The overwhelming success of "Bankuza" prompted the appointment of Victor Kamenyo as her official manager. Culminating in her inaugural concert organized by NIK Productions, Becky's rising star shone bright, despite a limited catalog at the time.
Transitioning from NIK Productions in 2019, Becky found new management under David Lutalo's guidance. This transition facilitated further studio recordings and collaboration, underscoring her ongoing musical evolution. Victor Kamenyo accused Chosen Becky of betrayal, citing impatience as her reason for departing NIK Productions. Later, she severed ties with David Lutalo's management, though the exact motive remains unclear.
While Becky has released numerous standout tracks, none have surpassed the success of "Bankuza."
Notable songs include "Kapyata," "Tokyuka," "Nesiimye," "Baloope," "Jangu Nkwagalira ddala," "Love gyompa Kansubire," "Katego," "Kyosaba," "Ndaajana," "Byokola," and "Aliba ani Bankuza."
Becky garnered acclaim, winning the Afrobeat Song of the Year at the Zzina Awards in 2019 for "Bankuza."
Relationship Choice: Becky is a mother of two, having given birth to her first son at 16, fathered by photographer Jjagwe Ronald, whom she fell in love with during her youth.
Controversy arose during Becky's second pregnancy, with speculation about the father's identity involving comedian Maluana and blogger Amir. Post-birth, paternity tests revealed Amir as the father. Initially thought childless upon her rise to fame in 2019, revelations in 2020 unveiled her prior motherhood, prompting reconciliation efforts with Ronald over their child's custody.
Upon exiting NIK Productions, Victor Kamenyo criticized Becky as rude and disloyal for her perceived impatience. Following a brief stint with David Lutalo's management, Becky pursued an independent path.
